Sclerosing injection therapy is a treatment option to relieve localized nerve pain . The treatment is performed in an office setting. Sclerosing injections consist of a cocktail of 0.5% Marcaine and 4% dehydrated alcohol. Studies have shown that this small concentration of alcohol can initiate a chemical neuroloysis (break down / degeneration ) of the nerve and after a series of repeated injections can result due to decreaseing and/or eliminating the pain by "short circuiting" the transmission of the nerve. The treatment series typically requires five to seven injections given over the course of three months. Patients have been reported to begin to see improvement after the third or fourth injection. These injections are typically recommended as an alterantive to surgical intervention.
