for NAIL MATRIXECTOMY - removal of the nail plate and root (permanent)

- leave bandage intact for a minimum of 4 hours; recommend taking off bandage prior to bedtime
- upon removal of bandage, begin soaking in acetic acid solution (1:4 ratio white vinegar to water) for 10-15 minutes (it may be easier to remove the bandage in the solution)
- pat dry foot and surgery site upon completion
- apply light coat of aloe or zinc oxide to surgery site(s)
- leave open to air dry, but if covering, use a band-aid over the top of the toe

- this may drain for up to 3 days following the procedure

- the base of the nail may also have a small blister develop as the phenol used creates a burn to the site to kill the root so we treat the wound like a burn

SOME HELPFUL HINTS FOR EITHER SURGERY

  • Prior to the anesthesia wearing off in the toe, we recommend taking either over the counter Tylenol or over the counter Ibuprofen (ie Motrin, Advil) which will allow you to 'stay ahead of any pain that may develop'
  • The first time that you remove the bandage and soak, we recommend removing the bandage while the toe is in the soaking solution as to avoid pulling off any scab that may have developed and to loosen any adherence of the gauze to the nail surgery site.
  • If you were prescribed antibiotics, take the prescription as written until you return for your post-operative visit
